Mitchell T. Davey is a tenor, composer, and conductor from Spokane, WA and the current choral scholar for Chorale Coeur d'Alene. He began his musical journey singing with the Spokane Area Youth Chorus under the direction of Kristina Ploeger and Darnelle Preston. As a result, Mitch began studying voice with Preston who continued as his voice teacher through high school and college. Mitch sang at Gonzaga University for four years with both the Concert and Chamber Choirs under the direction of Timothy Westerhaus. He made his professional choral debut this past summer with the Oregon Bach Festival Chorale. In addition to his Choral Scholar responsibilities, Mitch currently serves as artistic director of the Spectrum Singers and sings with Kantorei at St. John’s Cathedral, both in Spokane. Mitch graduated from Gonzaga University in May 2018 with a B.A. in Music Composition and plans to pursue a M.M. in Music Composition and medical school.
Chorale Coeur d'Alene
Choral Scholar Program
The leadership of Chorale Coeur d'Alene led by our Artistic Director Dr. Stan McDaniel initiated our Choral Scholar Program in the 2017-18 season as a combination of educational and community outreach and our own organizational needs.
Choral Scholars are college or university music majors or recent graduates, often with a major in choral conducting or vocal performance, who come to us highly recommended by their teachers/advisers and who will generally have an expressed interest in pursuing either singing or conducting as a career. He or she is chosen by audition, and we provide a monthly stipend funded outside our operating budget by donations. For that funding we expect our Choral Scholar to study and be able to provide leadership for the entire repertoire in the current season; attend all rehearsals, performances and other activities; and to perform other needed leadership tasks as appropriate to his/her individual skills and strengths.
Our first and current Choral Scholar is Mitchell Davey, a tenor, composer, conductor and recent graduate of Gonzaga University from which he earned a B.A. in Music Composition. Mitch plans to pursue a Masters degree in Music Composition as well as medical school. During his tenure with Chorale Coeur d'Alene Mitch's contributions are many as he gains practical experience in his chosen field.
The principal purpose of our Choral Scholar program is educational. As a regional chorus, it is absolutely critical that we provide incentives for outstanding young adult singers and potential conductors to pursue their dreams. It is not a stretch of the imagination that a Choral Scholar will be the Artistic Director of Chorale Coeur d'Alene at some time in the future.
We invite our friends to support this program, strengthening the Chorale and encouraging the growth of professional musician.
